Traditions only survive if someone keeps them alive

Volunteering at the Chinese Tower

Behind every Stammtisch table, every appearance at the Kocherlball and behind this website there are people who do this in their spare time. Chinesischer Turm e.V., the Munich association at the Chinese Tower, runs on volunteers, and this page explains how to join in. The good news first: the entry ticket is a Mass of beer in the second-largest beer garden in Munich.

What the association does

Chinesischer Turm e.V. grew out of a beer garden regulars' table and was registered in Munich in 2019 (VR 208108). Its mission, written into the statutes: keeping Bavarian beer garden culture and the traditions at the Chinese Tower alive. In practice that means running the monthly Stammtisch, being present at the Kocherlball and the festivals of the year, and documenting the tower's history on this website, the most detailed source about the Chinese Tower on the web.

Ways to help

Host the Stammtisch

The first Saturday of the month is our fixed point. Organising tables, welcoming new faces, planning special gatherings: if you enjoy being a host, this is your role.

Festivals and traditions

Kocherlball, maypole season, the Christmas market: the Bavarian calendar at the tower has its fixed dates, and the association shows up. Helping hands are needed on site, for setting up, for taking photos, and sometimes simply as a reliable table of people in Tracht showing that the tradition is alive.

Knowledge and website

This website is the association's memory: history, traditions, the Kocherlball archive. If you like writing, photographing or digging through old records, you can help expand it.

Keep the club running

A registered association also needs the unglamorous bits: general assembly, treasury, minutes. Shared across several shoulders, it is quickly done.

How to start

Come to the Stammtisch on the first Saturday of the month at 3 pm at the Chinese Tower beer garden. No registration, no requirements; a beer and a chat will do. If you prefer email, write to presse@chinesischerturmev.de. And if you want to make it official, membership costs 10 euros per month and comes with voting rights at the assembly.
